Work Arrangements
This regular, full-time (35 hours per week) position is available starting September 5, 2023. Regular hours of work will typically be scheduled between 10:30 AM and 6:30 PM on weekdays. On occasion, later shifts will be scheduled between 2:00 PM and 10:00 PM. Must be available to work afternoons and evenings.

Shift days and times may change depending on the Department’s need. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. The position is located at the New Westminster campus; however, the successful candidate must be available for occasional work at the Coquitlam campus.

The Role
To provide laboratory instruction, evaluation and supervision of students in the psychology laboratory including preparation of materials for use in the laboratory. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.
Responsibilities
1. Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration related to college psychology courses.
a. instructs students with respect to the laboratory component of college psychology courses in the laboratory and during field trips;
b. demonstrates the correct use of computers and equipment in the laboratory;
c. develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning;
d. provides direction with respect to professional/ethical standards for use of human participants in experiments;
e. instructs students with respect to safety procedures;
f. supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures.

2. Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.
a. evaluates written work submitted by students as well as the performance of students in the laboratory in relation to laboratory requirements of courses;
b. assesses and assigns final laboratory grades;
c. provides, during work hours but outside of regularly scheduled experiential learning activities, additional assistance to students in relation to course work;
d. administers psychometric tests and surveys, ensuring their secure storage.

3. Prepares materials for use in the laboratory.
a. assesses new information and determines its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory;
b. sets and evaluates laboratory quizzes and exams;
c. creates and/or initiates the development of supplementary instructional materials such as posters, information sheets, etc.;
d. researches, designs and writes experiments for use as instructional materials;
e. designs and runs statistical tests.

4. Performs other related duties.
a. creates, maintains and updates report sheets;
b maintains records of psychology laboratory grades;
c. sets up laboratory equipment and demonstrations and ensures equipment is in good working order;
d. participates as a discipline member in the revision of laboratory materials and manuals;
e. maintains currency with respect to psychology and psychology laboratory instruction, at a proficiency level similar to that of a psychology teaching assistant at a university.
To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
1. Good working knowledge of the English language (verbal and written).

2. Bachelor Degree in Psychology from a recognized post-secondary educational institution or equivalent combination of training and experience.

3. Good working knowledge of course content; operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus; modern techniques including statistical analysis and computers pertaining to the instruction of Psychology courses.

4. Excellent working knowledge of preventative measures required for the safe operation of laboratory equipment.

5. Demonstrated ability to communicate courteously and effectively in writing, in person, or over the telephone with staff, faculty, administrators, students and the public, as well as maintain good working relationships with other employees.

6. Demonstrated ability to work independently under minimum direct supervision, as well as establish priorities and achieve deadlines.

7. Ensures the integrity and confidential nature of information is maintained including instructional and computer related data.

8. Proven ability to effectively demonstrate proper laboratory techniques.

9. Ability to maintain current knowledge in the field of Psychology (at a proficiency level similar to that of a psychology teaching assistant at a university).
